Email Group Frequently Asked Questions List (FAQ)

Overview || Subscribing || Web Access || Unsubscribing || Contact

1. What is it?

An electronic mailing list (aka listserv) for discussions about Hollywood Happy Hour and its fans.

2. How did it begin?

We decided to start up a mailing list in order to keep folks informed of updates to the Hollywood Happy Hour schedule and also to provide a forum for those who'd like to share their feedback with us and connect with fellow Hollywood Happy Hour participants. Even though it's been a long while since our last in-person event, our Yahoo Group is going strong.

3. Who's on the list?

Nelson Aspen, Bonnie Gillespie, Kristyn Burtt, as well as a few of our corporate sponsors, past guests, regular attendees, and our devoted fans! Over the years, the list has grown from a hundred or so early-adopters to over 1600 actors, agents, managers, publicists, casting directors, producers, directors, publicists, journalists, writers, singers, songwriters, and fun people from all over the world!

4. How does the list work?

The free list is maintained at Groups.Yahoo.com and there is no affiliation between Hollywood Happy Hour and Yahoo. Delivery options for list discussions include individual messages by email (one email per post to the list--the most timely, highest volume option), a digest by email (one email per day of all posted messages--the low volume, less timely option), and access via the list website (visit the site to read posts--no notification by email). List members choose their own method of delivery and may change it at any time by visiting the website and choosing EDIT MY MEMBERSHIP. Please, if you are receiving too much mail, consider switching to "digest mode."

5. How does one subscribe?

By email: Send a blank email (no subject or message needed) to Hollywood-Happy-Hour-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Yahoo Groups will send a confirmation email shortly. Respond to that email as requested (this is to prevent unwanted subscriptions to others' email addresses).

or

At the website: Visit
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Hollywood-Happy-Hour and click on "Join This Group." Follow the instructions from there.

6. What is the welcome message?

Upon subscribing, you will receive a welcome message that contains some very important information about this list (it will look suspiciously like this very file). Please read it carefully and save it for future reference. It explains some important items to help get you started, including: common web lingo, our policy on controversial topics, our caution regarding urban legends and common myths, and information on unsubscribing from the list. You'll actually receive this message twice. That's how important it is!

7. How will I know it's working?

Wait and the messages will come according to the delivery preferences you have selected, to the email address linked up with your Yahoo ID.

To reply to a message, simply use the reply function in your email program or use the reply link at the group website.

Note: Your reply will go to every member of the list unless you decide otherwise. Please reply to the sender directly if your reply is too personal for the rest of the list to see. Yes, we know it looks like you're *just* replying to one person, but we promise, hitting reply on a message that comes from HHH will send your reply to all of HHH. Of course, we encourage sharing juicy secrets in public!

To send a new message to the list membership, use your email program to compose and send your message to Hollywood-Happy-Hour@yahoogroups.com or use the post link at the group website. There you will see a screen where you may compose, edit, review, and send your message. Please use descriptive subject lines when posting a new message. Note: if you have subscribed using ONE email address and try to post from another address, you'll be told you don't have a membership to the group. Yahoo is only a machine, after all.

8. What are the list rules?

Have fun.

Read the welcome message and abide by it.

Decide whether your replies need to be to an individual member or to the group membership before hitting reply.

Exercise good judgment on controversial topics.

Do not forward urban legends or common myths to the list.

Do not include the HHH mailing list in email "blasts" to a large number of recipients. Please use BCC to protect those to whom you send email.

Do not include the HHH mailing list in "add my address book" functions at social networking sites.

Engage in promotional blasts only once per two months. HHH is not your personal mailing list. If you'd like to invite the membership to JOIN your mailing list, that's great. But if you're promoting something, you need to do so in a very thoughtful way, and that translates to one unsolicited blast per two months. We're also not fans of shills (folks who pose a question that can be--conveniently--answered by whatever it is that you're selling). Please don't be "that guy."

Do not post the same message repeatedly. If it didn't get answers the first time, it's probably either something easily searched out in the archives OR something on which no one has an opinion at this time.

Do not re-post nearly identical messages because of a typo. Since most HHH members receive individual messages, your re-posts can get our group marked as spamtastic with many ISPs. Please, instead, reply to your first post and add the correction. Okay?

Include details, when you're passing along information. Rumors or quick blurbs without backup will be rejected.

Do not engage in flame wars. If you want to start a fight, go to a playground and kick sand in someone's face. And please, if a fight is brewing, DO NOT ENGAGE TROLLS. Just let them be!

Participate in discussions. If you are overly "broadcast-tone" in your posts (meaning, you're not interacting with other individual members on THEIR topics of choice, but are simply hijacking the HHH mailing list to say your peace), your messages will be rejected. PLEASE READ THIS THREAD ON SPAMMERS AND SHILLS after your membership has been approved.

Please report abusive posts or "flaming" immediately. If someone from the HHH membership is contacting you off-list in an inappropriate way, please let us know.

9. What does LOL mean?

Many common Internet abbreviations have evolved as an adjunct to electronic communication. Visit this site for a more comprehensive list. A few you'll see around here are:

IMO: in my opinion

FYI: for your information

LOL: laughing out loud

ROTFL: rolling on the floor, laughing

ROTFLMAO: rolling on the floor, laughing my ass off

OMGTTFFTIHERIMEL: oh my goodness, that's the funniest freakin' thing I have ever read in my entire life (a Bonnie Gillespie original)

TTYL: talk to you later

LYMI: love ya, mean it

HTH: hope this helps

FAQ: frequently asked questions

YMMV: your mileage may vary

10. What is netiquette?

Please visit The Natural Life Cycle of a Mailing List for a wry-but-true look at how mailing lists originate and evolve.  For Bonnie's personal policy on treating Internet communities as cocktail parties, read this.

Remember that your messages will be read by hundreds of people from all walks of life. Members subscribe and unsubscribe without much fanfare, so you can never be sure at any given time who is reading what you've said. Besides, if it's brilliant, you can bet it'll be forwarded around.

Please be responsible for what you post. Keep in mind that most stories that are forwarded to you are probably Internet urban legends. Always check the validity of forwarded stories at Snopes.com. 99.9% of the time, the story you are tempted to send along is actually a false email that has been churning around the Internet for a good ten years or so.

11. Do I have to visit the website?

Nope. You may read and post exclusively by email.

12. What is on the website?

Archived posts; the ability to search those archived posts by keyword; the ability to read, reply, and send messages to the list; a chat room for real-time text messaging; a list calendar; recommended links; the ability to respond to polls; storage space for files and photographs; and the ability to change your personal settings and preferences.

13. How do I get to the website?

Click here or type http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Hollywood-Happy-Hour in your browser.

If you have registered at Yahoo sites in the past, you will need to enter your Yahoo ID and your password. Generally, you will only have to do this once per day if you select the "Remember Me" option.

If you have not registered at Yahoo sites in the past, you will have to enter your email address and create a Yahoo ID. The instructions for this are fairly clear and you should only have to do this once, then you will simply enter your Yahoo ID from here on out.

14. How do I read messages on the website?

The main page shows a record of the number of messages posted by month. Click on "Messages" on the left-hand side to be taken to a screen where the most recent messages will be ready for you to read. "Expand Messages" will allow you to view the text of these messages all on one page. Use the "Prev," "Next," "First," and "Last" links to navigate through the message list.

15. What if I get confused?

Yahoo Groups online documentation is available by selecting the "Help" link. If that doesn't work for you, refer back to this FAQ. After that... *sigh* ...I guess you'd better shoot one of us an email.

16. How do I add an event to the calendar?

To add your event, shoot an email to info@hollywoodhappyhour.com with all the pertinent information.

17. How do I use the chat room?

The chat feature is not very popular just yet. Please feel free to use it and to judiciously invite others to join you when you'll be there for a while.

18. What do I do with my burning questions?

After a short while, you will get a feel for who the active list members are. These folks are a good starting point for your questions on what the list is about, informal rules, etc. You may also post your question to the list. You're sure to get opinions and answers there. Remember to check the Yahoo Help section if necessary.
